Tough conditions at Hervey Bay

The final round of the 2017 championship at Hervey Bay had it all over the weekend,

Saturdays Pole Position Shootout had the smoothest water conditions that an competitor could remember.

Sunday race day the conditions had turned to what race competitors had come to expect at Hervey Bay with short sharp chop that can stand up and send the boats off into any direction.

With both Supercat Extreme and Supercat Outboard championships up for grabs some teams had to think about both races and the point required to win a championship.

Race 1, Supercat Extreme, Maritimo Australia(Tom Barry-Cotter and Steve Jellick) shoot out of the gate with Mega Fuels (Chris and Brendan Frier), 222 Offshore (Darren Nicholson and Peter McGrath) and Maritimo Racing (Ross and Andrew Willaton), Team 3 did not take the start with a trim issue, with hi flying racing 222 Offshore moved up on Mega Fuels and then Maritimo Australia to take the lead, Mega Fuels also passing Maritimo Australia in to second,  222 Offshore taking the win by only 3 seconds over MegaFuels, Maritimo Australia coming 3rd followed by Maritimo Racing.

Supercat Outboard, Saracen (Matt and Steve Kelly) took the lead from Hogs Breath (Chris Haeger and Paul Fowlds), Phantom (Mick Walker and Ian Harris)and Team 88 Powerzone (Michael and Gryff Ethell), 20 minutes into the race Hogs Breath pull into the middle of the course with a propeller issue, Saracen taking the win from Phantom and Team 88 Powerzone.

Race 2, Supercat Extreme Team 3 (Travis Thompson and John Shand) were back on course ready to go, once again Maritimo Australia took the lead over Mega Fuels, 222 Offshore, Maritimo Racing and Team 3, at the end of the front straight Maritimo Racing pulled of the course with a mechanical issue, once again 222 Offshore and Mega Fuels moved passed Maritimo Australia and Team 3 in 4th, this is how they stayed for the race with less than a minute between 1st and 3rd.

Supercat Outboard, Hogs Breath took the lead from Saracen, Phantom and Team 88 Powerzone and that’s how it stayed for the race, with Phantom and Team 88 Powerzone both knowing they needing to get finish points for their championship race, played safe to finish.

A Huge thank you to the town of Hervey Bay for being a great host to the final round and the support from the locals.

Large Crowds and tight racing at Lake Macquarie 2017

Round 4 at Lake Macquarie was an outstanding weekend with large crowds watching the close racing all around the lake.

For the first time there were 3 races over the weekend with the Saturday pole position shootout being replaced with a race.

Supercat Extreme team “Maritimo 12” dominated the weekend with 3 wins, “Mega Fuels” picked up 23rds and a 2nd, “222 offshore” a 2nd , 3rd and a DNF, The surprise package for the weekend was “Team 3” taking it to Maritimo but had trouble in 2 races with a 4th, 2nd and DNF,

Supercat Outboard had an battle between “Team 88 powerzone”, “Phantom” and “Saracen” with the lead changing over several laps and not more 20 seconds between the boats,

“Team 88 powerzone” 2 1st and a 2nd, “Phantom” a 1st and 2 2nds, “Saracen” 3 3rds,

Teams really enjoyed the track and the large crowds supporting the event, this all would not be possible without great local support,

Marmong Point Marina

Destination NSW

Lake Macquarie City Council

Dantia and the 200 club

NSW Transport

NSW Roads and Maritime

Wilson Lift

Win Television

And all of the volunteers that gave their time to make the event happen.

Lake Macquarie is set to host round Four of the 2017 Offshore Superboat Championships (OSC) on the 14th and 15th of October!
this is going to be a huge Free Event for the people of the Hunter Region, with even more racing and the inclusion of the Lake Mac Big Weekend there will be plenty to see and plenty to do , as well as two days of on water racing from the big Offshore boats on the most Spectacular Viewer friendly course in Australia .

This high profile, high-octane sporting event will hit Lake Macquarie on the 14th and 15th of October .

The Lake Macquarie round of the 2017 Offshore Superboat Championships is proudly supported by the NSW Government’s tourism and major events agency, Destination NSW. Maritime services, Lake Macquarie City Council and all the member of the 200 Club who put in to be sponsors of this event , Gibbos Auto Electrics who won naming rights to the event via Dantias 200 Club (sign up at the event for your chance for next year ), Dantia has been instrumental in getting this event for the Region.
A huge thanks to Marmong Point Marina and Les Binkin who championed this event for the Hunter Region and has made it a reality .

Event organizers said it is great to have Lake Macquarie on the race calendar again this year.
We are glad to be able to bring this Event to the Hunter Region, and bring a huge influx of people and spectators with us , With the event so close to Sydney ,a huge crowd of fans will be travelling up to spend their weekend at Lake Macquarie.
“The town has so much to offer, presenting the perfect arena for fans and spectators alike with a looping course that stretches from Warners Bay to Marmong Point Marina
. You can expect us to create quite a spectacle!”

Marmong Point Marina ,and Dantia have come on board as sponsors for the round as well as, RMS, Wilson Lift And Crown Lands ,without this support and the support from local residents and businesses the Offshore Superboats would not be here this year.

Saturday will see a first for our sport , with a race on Saturday starting at 1pm going for 20 minutes , Then two thirty-minute races on Sunday at 11am and 1pm with the top end of the Lake closing fifteen minutes before each race.

“We’re racing between Warners Bay Shops and Marmong Point Marina so there is some fairly large sweeping turns that will give plenty of great vantage points around the Lake
Each lap is about 6 kilometres and there’ll be up to 10, million dollar plus race boats, not to mention their rigs, which are just as impressive.”

2017, Round 3, Cex Group Coffs Harbour Race

A great weekend of racing at Coffs Harbour over the weekend,

Teams were greated with high winds and large swell for Saturdays Pole Position Shootout and the thought of teams taking it easy in the conditions were unfounded, every point counts in this years championship.

Sunday race day the winds and swell had dropped and teams having to think of setup for race 1, When the flag dropped Supercat Extreme “Maritimo 12” Tom Barry-Cotter and Steve Jellick got a break over “222 Offshore” Darren Nicholson and Peter McGrath closely followed by “Team Australia” Brett Luhrmann and Karl Wall who have had a lot of work to do to the boat from round 2 at Bowen after an engine bay fire, They had been fighting the clock to be ready, “Mega Fuels” Brendan and Chris Frier were trading positions with “Team Australia” followed by “Maritimo 11”.

Supercat Outboard was a tight battle between “Mancine” Brent Price and Simon Isherwood and “Phantom” Mick Walker and Ian Harris, “Team 88 Powerzone” Gryff and Michael  Ethell and back to the series “Saracen” Antony DeFina and Matt Kelly, But after 8 minutes of racing on an offshore turn “Phantom” rolled upside down, both Mick and Ian managed to exit the boat unharmed , this brought a red flag and once “Phantom was under tow race 1 was restarted.

Race 1;

Supercat Extreme

1st: Maritimo 12

2nd: 222 Offshore

3rd: Team Australia

Supercat Outboard

1st: Mancine Cosmetics

2nd: Saracen

3rd: Team 88 Powerzone

Race 2 Kicked off the same as race 1 with Supercat Extreme, “Maritimo 12” got to the lead closely followed by “222 Offshore”, “Mega Fuels and “Team Australia” were battling each other until ” Team Australia”slowed on lap 3 with an engine issue, on lap 13 “Mega Fuels” also slowed fearing they had a hole in the boat, there was no hole but some hull damage,”Maritimo 11″ were unable to make the start of race 2 with an electrical issue.

Supercat Outboard “Mancine” took the lead as “Saracen” and “Team 88 Powerzone” continued their battle togeather.

Race 2;

Supercat Extreme

1st: Maritimo 12

2nd: 222 Offshore

3rd; Mega Fuels

Supercat Outboard

1st; Mancine Cosmetics

2nd; Team 88 Powerzone

We must thank all of the public that came to watch and come up to the teams to have a chat,

Thank you to , Coffs Harbour City Council, C.ex Group, Destination NSW, Roads and Maritime, Coffs Harbour International Marina and North Coast Cranes.

2015 Hervey Bay Decider

As teams rolled in to Hervey Bay the 2015 championships were still up for grabs in Supercat Extreme, Supercat 600hp and the AUS 1 title.

Saturdays Pole Position Shootout would see who would be on pole for Sundays 2 races,

Unfortunately ‘Yellow Brick Road’ did not make on the water with a rudder issue nor did ‘Hogs Breath’ with a gear shift problem, with both teams fixed by the afternoon ready for Sunday.

‘SUV Ram Trucks’ suffered the worst while on the Shootout course getting the boat on to its side filling the cowl with water and into the engine, causing it to snap and bend conrods and seize the engine, This was the end of the weekend to a team that puts so much into the sport.

Saturday afternoon also saw the teams on a street parade through downtown Hervey Bay,

The teams enjoyed (and look forward to) towing the boats through the streets, tooting their horns and waving to the thousands of people lining the streets.

Sunday race 1,  Supercat Extreme teams lead off with ‘Maritimo’ (Ross Willaton and Travis Thompson) taking the lead from ‘Yellow Brick Road’(Brendon and Chris Frier) and ‘Team 3 (Tom Barry-Cotter and Steve Jellick), this is how they stayed to the flag,

Supercat 600hp was a little closer with ’Team 88’ (Micheal and Gryff Ethell) and ‘Phantom’ (Paul Gibbs and Mick Walker) taking the lead closely followed by ‘SUV Ram Trucks jnr’ (Taelah Saloumidis and Ian Harris) and ‘Hogs Breath’(Jim Harris and Paul Fowlds),  all the boats were close until on the fourth lap ‘SUV Ram Trucks jnr’ pulled off the course with a broken drive shaft, ‘Hogs Breath’ went on to take first place followed by ‘Phantom’ and ‘Team 88’.

Race 2 conditions had changed with the wind and seas picking up leaving some large holes for the teams to deal with,

Supercat Extreme went the same way as race 1 with ‘Maritimo’ taking the win from ‘Yellow Brick Road’ and ‘Team 3’.

Supercat 600hp again was a close race with the lead changing several times until ‘team 88’ suffered a fuel pick up issue and drifted back, leaving ‘Phantom’ and ‘Hogs Breath’ to fight for 1st place,

‘Hogs Breath’ taking the win followed by ‘Phantom’ and ‘Team 88’,

With ‘Hogs Breath’ winning the 2 races they also won the 2015 Supercat 600hp Championship and also became AUS 1, the first time since 1997 an outboard boat has won the AUS 1 title.

‘Maritimo’ won the 2015 Supercat Extreme title.

Hervey Bay once again was a great venue for offshore racing, this could not happen without the fantastic local support from Fraser Coast Opportunities, Hervey Bay Boat Club and the Local adopt a team sponsors.

Thank you to our Race director and his crew and all of the volunteers that help over the weekend.

AUS 1, Hogs Breath Offshore Racing, Jim Harris and Paul Fowlds

2015 Supercat Extreme Champions

1st, Maritimo, Ross Willaton and Travis Thompson

2nd, Yellow Brick Road, Brendon and Chris Frier

3rd, Team 3, Tom Barry-Cotter and Steve Jellick

2015 Supercat 600hp Champions

1st, Hogs Breath Offshore Racing, Jim Harris and Paul Fowlds

2nd, Team 88 Offshore, Micheal and Gryff Ethell

2016 Final round wrap

The Final round of the 2016 Offshore Superboat Championships has been run and won at beautiful Hervey Bay,

The weather gods put on the sunshine and challenging water conditions.

Race 1 with points still close in all the 3 classes teams would have a battle to take out their championship trophies.

Supercat Extreme,  ‘222 Offshore’ (Darren Nicholson and Karl Wall) took to the lead with ‘Maritimo 15’ (Andrew Searle and Andrew Willaton) and ‘Yellow Brick Road’ (Brendan and Chris Frier) Chasing them down, That’s how positions stayed with ‘222 Offshore’ taking 1st place, ‘Maritimo 15’ 2nd.

Supercat 1000hp, ‘Pro Floors’ (Wayne Valder and Chris Hanley) battled with ‘Team 3’ (Tom Barry-Cotter and Steve Jellick) for the class win and also the “Trans Tasman Challenge” between Aussie & Kiwis, ‘Pro Floors’ taking 1st place, ‘Team 3’ 2nd.

Supercat Outboard, ‘Barely Legal’ (John Shand and Mike Knight) took to the lead and being chased by ‘R Marine Crawley’ (Glenn Campbell and Andy Smith), ‘Gold Coast City Marina’ (Michael & Gryff Ethell) and ‘Hogs Breath Offshore Racing’ (Jim Harris and Paul Fowlds), that’s how it stayed until the last lap when a water pickup came off ‘Barely Legal’ flooding the starboard sponson but still managing to cross the line,

‘R Marine Crawley’ 1st, ‘Barely Legal’2nd, ‘Hogs Breath Offshore Racing’ 3rd, ‘Gold Coast City Marina’ 4th.

Race 2, with sometime between the races some teams had a lot of work to do before race start.

Unfortunately ‘Maritimo 15’, ‘222 offshore’ & ‘Barely Legal’ could not make it back on course.

Supercat Extreme,  ‘Yellow Brick Road’ and ‘Maritimo 11’ (Ross Willaton and Travis Thompson) fought each other for the entire race, ‘Maritimo 11’ 1st, Yellow Brick Road’ 2nd.

Supercat 1000hp, ‘Pro Floors’ showed a clean set of heels from the start to take 1st with ‘Team 3’ 2nd.

Supercat Outboard, It was clear ‘R Marine Crawley’ were on a mission from the flag drop pulling away from the field until midway through, they slowed and being passed by ‘Hogs Breath Offshore Racing’ and ‘Gold Coast City Marina’, ‘R Marine Crawley’ managed to stay on the plane with a broken prop.

‘Hogs Breath Offshore Racing’ 1st, ‘Gold Coast City Marina’ 2nd & ‘R Marine Crawley’ 3rd.

A fantastic weekend of racing with fantastic local support from Businesses and the public,

Special mention to the Beach House Hotel, Handy Hire, Wide Bay Cranes and Fraser Coast Council.

Also to all the volunteers over the weekend, without your support the event cannot go ahead.

Thank you to our race director and his crew for a great job over the season and of course to all of the offshore teams that put in a lot to go and have fun on the water.
